The three primary responsibilities for the Street Department are streets, sidewalks, and storm drains. 

Staff

The department is supervised by a Street Superintendent, who is assisted by two supervisors and two program coordinators. During fair weather seasons, one concrete crew and one blacktop crew spend much of their time doing spot repairs to curbs, walks, and road surfaces. Smaller crews attend to:

  • Incidental Roadside Cleanup
  • Mowing
  • Sign and Pavement Marking Maintenance
  • Storm Drain Cleaning
  • Street Sweeping

Fair Weather Activities

The most visible fair weather activities of the Street Department are the annual Spring Cleanup and Fall Leaf Pickup programs.

Winter Months

During winter months, all but emergency blacktop and concrete work cease, and most of the department is focused on snow and ice control. The basic winter fleet includes fifteen large plow trucks, seven of which are also fitted with boxes and spreaders for applying salt or sand/salt mixtures. 

Plows

Frequently, as snow accumulation warrants, snow is trucked out of downtown parking lots, where space is limited; three front-end loaders are available to load snow. Holland is unique in providing sidewalk plowing, using five small all-purpose tractors. During other seasons, the plows can be easily removed and the same tractors outfitted with mowers or sidewalk brooms.

Funding

Funding to support the work of the department is derived primarily from Michigan gasoline taxes, a portion of which is returned to local street maintenance agencies under a specific formula.
