City Assistance in Household Clean-Up from Storm Damage

More than 8 inches of rain fell over a 24-hour period, leaving many basements in the City of Holland wet or flooded.  While there was some structural damage, the bulk of the damages and losses are to personal or household goods.  These are often not covered by insurance and may be difficult to dispose of.

The City is offering two programs to assist residents in cleaning up this damage.

Residents may participate in a curbside pickup scheduled for Saturday, June 27, 2009 starting at 7:00 AM.

To have your storm-damaged items only removed from the curb, you need to call 355-1335, or 355-1388 on Wednesday (June 24), Thursday (June 25), or Friday (June 26), between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM.

·         Provide your name, address, and phone number

·         Describe materials to be picked up (storm damage only)

·         Confirm that materials will on the curb by 7:00 AM

All materials must be placed on the curb in front of your home by 7:00 AM on Saturday, June 27.  Limit the debris to household items damaged by the storm.  Other materials for disposal will not be picked up. No liquid or hazardous waste will be accepted.

Limited additional appointments will be available for special pickups from June 29 through July 3, however, these are limited and you are encouraged to have everything removed on Saturday.  Call 355-1335 or 355-1388 for these pickups.

In addition to the curbside pick-up, coupons for one free disposal are available on the third floor of City Hall, 270 S. River Avenue.  Please be prepared to show proof of residency.  A coupon is good for one pick-up truck load of debris, or one trailer load of similar size, to be disposed of at the Chef/Westshore Recovery facility at 4376 60th Street (south on Graafschap Road to site).  No hazardous or liquid waste will be accepted.

City residents may take advantage of one or both of these programs to assist in disposing of household goods and materials damaged in Friday’s storm.

- - Reporting of Storm and Flood Damage in the City of Holland

The City of Holland is assessing the Private Damage to Homes and Businesses.

Thousands of Homes and Businesses have sustained Flood damage, primarily due to basement flooding.  There is no Local, State or Federal assistance known for the Private Damage to cover these losses.  The only assistance potentially available for this private loss would be a Small Business Administration (SBA) Declaration, making Low Interest Loans available to victims.  To qualify for this potential, Holland and Ottawa County will need to identify 25 or more homes or businesses that sustained a 40% or greater uninsured loss of the building structure only.  This does not include personal property.  Residents are encouraged to report this type of loss to the City of Holland at 355-1350 or visit the City Assessor’s office located on the first floor of City Hall at 270 South River Avenue, Holland, MI  49423.

Residents wishing to file a specific claim against the City of Holland should contact the Clerk’s Office at 355-1300 or visit the Clerk’s office on the second floor of City Hall.

- - Update on Storm Damage and Closings in the City of Holland

As of this date and time, the following streets remain fully closed to through traffic:

  • 24th Street, Lincoln Avenue to Apple Avenue
  • Azalea Avenue, South Shore Drive to Bertsch and Hiawatha

The following streets have been opened to traffic, but a portion of the roadway has only a temporary gravel surface, not asphalt; therefore, motorists are advised to use caution and travel slowly if using these streets:

  • 24th Street, Waverly Road to Country Club Road
  • Lincoln Avenue, 16th Street to 24th Street

There are still numerous roadways and sidewalls/bikepaths throughout the community that may have areas where a portion of the paves surface is marked with cones or barricades, as a result of shoulder washouts, sinkholes, or other such issues. Please observe these traffic safety devices and avoid those areas that are so designated.

Windmill Island Gardens is closed today, but hopes to re-open on Tuesday, June 23, 2009.

The boat launch at Kollen Park is closed until further notice due to an accumulation of debris in the launching area.
