Naturalist (Internship)
at the DeGraaf Nature Center

Naturalists-Interns become part of an on-going environmental education program that serves area schools and the general public. Weekend lectures, field trips, natural history walks and special events for the general public are also provided. West Michigan is rich in wooded dunes, lakes and wildlife and is an ideal place to teach many environmental concepts. Interns will teach, plan and implement programs and classes. A project dealing with wildlife, conservation or a subject that the intern is familiar with is also expected. Interns will have the opportunity to learn about the operation of a community nature center; budgets, staffing and maintenance. Training and supervision is provided. Position is 26-28 hours per week. A minimum of 4-6 months employment is desired. Pay is $8.00/hour. Housing and utilities provided in a historic 1870’s farmhouse.  Internships begin in mid-October.

Qualifications:   College student or graduate with significant coursework in biology, natural resources, environmental education, fisheries and wildlife, outdoor recreation or related field. A strong interest in teaching a variety of people about natural history and the environment is required.

BOARD & COMMISSION OPPORTUNITIES

  • The Brownfield Redevelopment Authority is seeking one individual for appointment to a three-year term. The Brownfield Redevelopment Authority is responsible for reviewing applications for Brownfield projects, Neighborhood Enterprise Zones (NEZ) and other economic development related projects. The ideal candidate would have a background in building and construction, finance or similar area although candidates from all sectors are encouraged to apply. Must be a City resident to qualify.
  • The Ourstreet Committee is seeking two different individuals from specific sectors for placement on the committee. One individual should be from Target Area II and the other from the Human Services sector. Questions regarding the qualifications and needs should be directed to Ourstreet Coordinator Sue Harder at 355-3133.
  • The Human Relations Commission is seeking one (1) individual for an appointment to a three-year term. The Human Relations Commission is responsible for consulting with/advising City Council on equal rights/opportunities affecting all Holland citizens.
