City of Holland to Host “9.11 Moment of Remembrance”
On Sunday, September 11, 2011, the City of Holland will recognize and remember the horrific events of September 11, 2001 and pay respects to all of those who lost their lives on that day. This ceremony of remembrance is part of similar 9.11 Moment of Remembrance ceremonies across the country.

At 12:45 p.m., Mayor Kurt Dykstra will lead a brief ceremony at Holland’s Centennial Park, which will also include the presentation of the colors by the Holland Department of Public Safety Honor Guard. Police and fire vehicles will be located at Centennial Park as well as at the following city parks and locations:

  • Windmill Island
  • Kollen Park
  • Rosa Parks Green
  • Moran Park
  • South Shore Drive and Myrtle Avenue
  • 40th Street and Washington Avenue
  • Maplewood Park
  • Holland Heights Park
  • 32nd Street and Waverly Avenue

At precisely 1:00 p.m., the emergency vehicles at these locations will sound their sirens for one minute, creating a wave of sirens throughout the city and calling forth Holland residents to stop their activities and remember the events of ten years ago. All Holland churches with bells are asked also to ring their church bells for one minute precisely at 1:00 p.m.

Holland residents are invited to participate in this 9.11 Moment of Remembrance by observing the minute of silence, whether in their homes, in one of the city parks, or at the ceremony’s main site in Centennial Park.
