Blizzards to Blooms Garden Contest Winners

Twenty exceptional summer gardens were entered into the “Blizzards to Blooms” Garden Contest conducted as a part of the City of Holland’s participation in the 2014 America in Bloom competition.  The entries were judged by Dirk Jonker of Jonker’s Garden, Joe Miedema of JW Greenhouses, and Steve Zwiep, Parks Superintendent for the City of Holland.

The contest was open to residential, commercial, institutional, and industrial properties within the City of Holland that are planted and maintained by amateur gardeners.  It was sponsored by the Holland in Bloom Committee, Carolyn Stich Studio, Jonker’s Gardens, and JW Greenhouses.

Congratulations to these winners, who will be recognized during the visit to Holland by the America in Bloom judges July 29-30, 2014:

Grand Prize – Landis & Judy Zylman, 92 W 40th Street, winners of an original drawing of the their home or garden by local artist Carolyn Stich and a gift certificate from Jonker’s Garden.

1st Prize – Bong & Wendy Jornales, 902 W 24th Street, winners of a $100 gift certificate from Jonker’s Garden.

2nd Prize – Rich & Joanne Avink, 16 E 40th Street, winners of a $50 gift certificate from Jonker’s Gardens.

3rd Prize – Clay Stauffer and Barbara Griffin, 607 Lawndale Ct, winner of a $50 gift certificate from JW Greenhouses.

The judges also awarded seven (7) honorable mentions to gardens that were deserving of a commendation for their overall care and design, and excellent use of plant materials.  The honorable mention gardens will have a placard in their yard recognizing these efforts.

America in Bloom (AIB) is an independent, non-profit organization that envisions communities across the country as welcoming and vibrant places to live, work, and play - benefitting from colorful plants and trees; enjoying clean environments; celebrating heritage; and planting pride through volunteerism.  The City of Holland is entering the contest for the 4th consecutive year, having won its population category and one criteria award in each of the past three years.  The City was also admitted to AIB’s “Circle of Champions” by virtue of the awards received.
