Lansing – Earlier today, the Michigan Alliance Against Hate Crimes (MIAAHC) honored several community groups as “MIAAHC Champions” at their fourth annual “MI Response to Hate” conference in Lansing. The awardees were recognized for their commitment to building community response systems to respond to, and prevent, hate crimes.

“We applaud all these individuals and their local coalitions. It takes both courage and commitment to stand up to hate and work to make Michigan a better state where we can live, work and play,” said Daniel H. Krichbaum, Director of the Michigan Department of Civil Rights. “These response systems are the best way to make sure everyone understands their individual role in the fight against bias crimes.”

The awardees include Mount Pleasant Community Response System, Ann Arbor Community Response System, Migrant and Seasonal Farmworkers Community Response System, Lapeer County Community Response System, the Greater Lansing Alliance Against Hate Crimes, the Holland Community Response System, Grand Rapids Community Response System, Flint Community Response System, the Farmington/Farmington Hills Community Response System and the Canton Response to Hate Crimes Coalition.

Over 250 people from a variety of backgrounds registered for the conference, representing law enforcement officers, prosecutors, civil rights organizations, and victim advocates. The conference featured keynote speaker Thomas E. Perez, Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division. Other plenary speakers included David Schneider, Investigative Researcher with the Anti-Defamation League (ADL); and reformed Skinhead and author Frank Meeink.

The Michigan Alliance Against Hate Crimes is a joint initiative between the Michigan Department of Civil Rights, and the US Attorneys Offices for the Eastern and Western Districts of Michigan. To learn more, please visit www.michigan.gov/mdcr and www.miaahc.com.
