Dutch students visit Holland to find immigrants' descendants

City of Holland Michigan Official Website

The Holland International Relations Commission recently hosted three Dutch students who were exploring the ties between immigrants from the province of Drenthe in the Netherlands and their descendants in Holland, Mich.

Daan Treurniet, Marit de Jong and Lodewijck Foorthuis spent two weeks in the area interviewing area residents and looking through the archives for their project, called MyPlacebook, which is financed by a tourism agency in Drenthe.

During their stay, the students were welcomed by members of the IRC and the Holland City Council, as well as an overwhelming response of community members wanting to participate in their project.

We continue to accept contact information for those wanting to share their stories with the students. Please call Nardy Baeza Bickel at (616) 3551328 or email at irc@cityofholland.com. I'm available Mondays 8:30 to 5 p.m. or Thursdays 1 to 5 p.m.
