The HDPS Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) consists of six police officers. The  team is utilized for barricaded subjects, hostage situations, suicidal subjects and other incidents where negotiations would be useful. The CNT works on a call-out basis.

CNT members have attended training at several schools including the FBI, Michigan State Police, Michigan Association of Hostage Negotiators (MAHN) and the Public Agency Training Council.

The Team trains regularly to hone their negotiation and communication skills. Training involves scenarios, speakers, table top discussions and videos. They also train annually with the Special Enforcement Team (SET).
