Bob is a Holland native and has lived here most of his life. He is a graduate of Calvin College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in education (history major), and earned a Master of Information and Library Studies degree from the University of Michigan. He works as the Director of the Fennville District Library. He and his wife Barbara (and their several pets) live on the west side of Holland. They have two sons and a daughter, and thirteen grandchildren.
Prior to being elected to City Council in 1991, Bob served as president of the Holland Area Historical Society, trustee of the Holland Historical Trust, member of the Holland Museum building committee, member of the CATV Advisory Commission, and member of the Depot Renovation Committee. In his past assignments on Council he has served on the City Hall Renovation Committee, the MAX Transit Authority and as liaison to the Herrick Library Board, the De Graaf Nature Center Board and the Downtown Development Authority. He currently serves as Mayor Pro-Tem and as Council's liaison to the Board of Public Works. He also represents Holland in the Michigan Port Cities Collaborative.
In his spare time, Bob enjoys researching local history, with a special interest in the history of the Pere Marquette Railroad, Great Lakes ships and classic wooden pleasure boats. He and Barbara are members of Ridge Point Community Church.
Bob was re-elected in 2011.
