Snow Removal

Public Roadways -
The City of Holland Transportation Services has a staff of 15 men to maintain approximately 148 miles (315 lane miles) of City Streets. When snow accumulates the men begin plowing on Major streets, those that handle higher volumes of traffic. After Major roads have been plowed the men then move to Local streets and Alleys. During a major snow event the men may repeat the Major roads several times before clearing snow from Local roads and Alleys.

Weather conditions can be unpredictable, placing extra demands on your vehicle and your driving skills.  While City crews make every effort to plow and salt roads as quickly as possible, motorists are also urged to slow down and drive appropriately for winter weather conditions. 

Once snow has been cleared from all roads and alleys workers will return to collect accumulated snow piles from dead-ends and cul-de-sac’s. Residents should note that there are over 140 dead-ends and cul-de-sac’s within the City so it may take some time for them to get to your street.

Sidewalk Snow Removal -
Although the City has long had an *Ordinance that requires the property owner to clear snow and ice from the sidewalk adjacent to the property, the existence of the City’s sidewalk plowing program has provided significant assistance to property owners in this endeavor. Sidewalk snow removal is assisted by Parks Department personnel and any questions should be directed to them at 616.928.2450.

*Sec. 32-11. Snow, ice, obstructions, rubbish, etc., on sidewalks.
No person having the care, either as owner or occupant, of any house, building or lot shall permit any snow, ice, dirt, rubbish, including broken bottles and glass, filth, obstruction or other articles or any nuisance to remain upon any sidewalks in front of such house, building or lot for longer than twenty-four (24) hours; and when ice is formed on any sidewalk, the owner or occupant of the abutting premises shall, within twelve (12) hours after the same has formed, cause the same to be removed or cause salt, sawdust, sand or other abrasive to be strewn thereon.

Parking Lots
City staff also remove snow from City owned and leased lots. This work involves snow plowing and hauling as time and weather permit.

Driveways -
Residents are reminded that snow removed from your driveway must remain on your property.  It is both dangerous and a ordinance violation to plow, shovel or snowblow your driveway snow into the roadway per Ordinance Section19-7.  See attachment below for Ordinance details.
