This morning at about 9:30 a.m., Holland Department of Public Safety - Fire Services responded to a report of a possible hazardous materials leak at the Tulip City Truck Stop located at 1796 M40. The first arriving firefighters confirmed a leak from a truck hauling ethanol. The crew began efforts to contain the leak, isolate the surrounding area, and summoned additional firefighters and resources to the scene. The Ottawa County Hazmat team was activated and responded.
This is an ongoing situation and will continue throughout the afternoon. The situation has been deemed under control and there is presently no threat to the public. The product will be offloaded from the leaking trailer once the situation has been deemed safe. Organizations providing on scene support include the Holland Engineering Department, Trinity Health EMS, and the National Weather Service.
UPDATE: All product from the leaking tank truck was transferred to another by a hazardous materials cleanup company. Product that was spilled prior to the transfer was collected in portable containment and through the use of absorbent materials. This intervention early into the incident prevented any material from entering drains or waterways. All public safety units cleared the scene shortly after 5:00 pm and turned the remainder of the cleanup over to the hazardous materials cleanup company.
