[ARCHIVED] Honoring a Day of Service

Non-emergency City offices will be closed on Monday, January 20, in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.


Below is a list of events.

  • MLK Social Justice Awards Presentation, Wednesday, January 15, 2025, 6 pm City Hall Council Chambers.
  • Annual Civil Rights Lecture with speaker John Williams, CEO of the Urban League of Akron, Ohio. Wednesday, Jan 15, 6pm at Dimnent Memorial Chapel, Hope College. Hosted by Hope College Center for Diversity and Inclusion
  • Evening of Inspiration with Jeremy Simpson to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Sunday, January 19, 7pm at First United Methodist Church, Holland.
  • The Gathering Freedom Night, Sunday, January 19, 8-9pm at Dimnent Memorial Chapel,  Hope College.
  • MLK Celebration and Leadership Summit, Monday, January 20, 8:30am-3:30pm at Haworth Hotel, Hope College.
  • Calvin University January Series: Journalist and author Jonathan Eig will discuss his latest book, King: A Life, winner of 2024 Pulitzer Prize for Biography. Monday, January 20,  12:30 pm. Remote viewing or simulcast at Christ Memorial Church or Evergreen Commons in Holland.
  • National Day of Racial Healing on January 21st:  Hope College will feature “T-Rex,” a documentary film about Claressa “T-Rex” Shields from Flint, who at age 17 became the first woman in history to win the gold medal in the 2012 Olympic boxing. Panel discussion with producer Sue Jaye Johnson and coach Jason Crutchfield. The screening will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Knickerbocker Theater in downtown Holland, located at 86 E 8th Street in Holland, Michigan. The screening is free and open to the public.
