This past Saturday, January 11, at about 6:20 p.m., HDPS officers and firefighters responded to 10th St. near Lincoln Ave. for a report of a subject who had been struck by a train.
First responders located 20 year old Jennifer Kasunick unconscious and not breathing. Life saving efforts were attempted and Jennifer was transported to Holland Hospital, where she later died as a result of the injuries.
Investigators spoke to witnesses and later were able to obtain video of the incident. Based on the investigation so far this is believed to be accidental. Jennifer, who is blind, was walking west bound on the sidewalk along 10th street. The train signals were activated for the approaching train. Jennifer stopped just east of the tracks, but apparently did not realize her close proximity to the tracks. She was clipped by the train as it passed.
Jennifer is a resident of Bay Village, Ohio and is also a Hope College student.
Neither drugs nor alcohol are believed to have contributed to the accident.
HDPS officers and fire fighters were assist by both AMR and Life ambulance services on scene.
